Photo-sharing use Twitpic says shutting down after Twitter threats

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 4 (Reuters) – Twitpic, an early online
service that allows Internet users to share photos on the
Twitter Inc amicable network, is shutting down due to
what it pronounced were authorised threats from Twitter.

The brawl revolves around Twitpic’s bid to have its
name authorized as a trademark, that Twitter appears to believe
violates a possess trademark.

Twitpic gained a constant following after a 2008 launch for
allowing users to post photos on Twitter’s amicable network.
Twitter has given combined a possess photo-sharing underline directly
within a Web service.

Noah Everett, a owner of a 6-year-old service, pronounced in
a blog post on Thursday that Twitter recently contacted his firm
demanding that it desert a heading application. If Twitpic
did not comply, Everett wrote, Twitter pronounced his use risked
losing entrance to a Twitter API – a record specification
that allows Twitpic to work with Twitter.

“Unfortunately we do not have a resources to deflect off a
large association like Twitter to say a symbol that we believe
wholeheartedly is justly ours. Therefore, we have motionless to
shut down Twitpic,” Everett wrote.

Twitter, that has 271 million monthly users, pronounced in a
statement that it was “sad” to see Twitpic close down its
service. “We inspire developers to build on tip of a Twitter
service, as Twitpic has finished for years, and we done it clear
that they could work regulating a Twitpic name. Of course, we
also have to strengthen a brand, and that includes trademarks
tied to a brand,” Twitter said.

The brawl with Twitpic is not a initial time that Twitter
has tangled with third-party apps and services that are formed on
its amicable network. In 2011 Twitter temporarily blocked
UberTwitter, a mobile app that offering a specialized approach to use
Twitter, for violating Twitter’s heading and a policies.
